Stay-at-home moms and extra work?

My husband and I are awaiting the arrival of our first little one in October and have decided that it would be easiest for me to stay home, which is great, but I would feel bad not contributing to our household at all. What our some jobs that I could do that would make a little extra income for our household a month but still make it possible for me to be a stay at home mother requiring little time away from our daughter where I would need a sitter?

Look into selling Avon.  The start up costs are very low compared to Mary Kay, you don't have to stock an inventory.  Plus, you don't have to rely on hosts/parties.  There are so many places to leave your Avon catalog - library, laundry mat, church, etc.

I am a mother of two little girls who are actually tugging on my arm as I write this so I will try to be brief. Many people are looking for work from home companies. All the scams definitely create a big problem but also, there is a problem of people misunderstanding the difference between work from home "jobs" and work from home opportunities. There really are not work from home “jobs”. To get that you have to start working for a company in their offices first, then they MAY allow you to take the job home.

Most of the work from home opportunities that are legitimate offers are not an hourly pay type job. They are business opportunities that help you in starting your own business from your home. What you should do first is to decide if you are simply looking for an hourly rate type job or if you are looking for more of an opportunity for additional income such as what you would make in your own business being your own boss from home. Small home businesses have some small costs involved, less than $500 to start is reasonable and I would stay away from those wanting $1000-$5000. It doesn’t cost that much to start and run a home business so you shouldn’t pay it.

If you are coming across places that say free then I would RUN don’t walk the other way! They never are. I tried them many a times and 3 weeks later I had to buy this and 6 weeks later that. After 6 months these “free businesses” had cost me over $800 on average.

After trying 15 things I now work about 18-25 hours per week for a National Medical Healthcare Company. This is a nationally known and reputable home business which is what you need to make sure you are looking for. I have been with the company almost a year and a half now and I make over $4500 a month! In your first month, depending on how many hours you can work, I have seen people make anywhere from $500 to over $2500. And your income will increase each month because you get paid residual income as well.

The best part is they have 401(k), direct deposit, life insurance and a benefits package most of which you get from day one. In addition, there are no products, no hard selling or pushing, no cold calling, no home parties and no telemarketing! That was VERY important to me. I absolutely love working with them and I can't believe I am making what I am making and in so few hours per week. Even more then all this is they are accepted at over 100,000 retailers nationwide. These are fortune 500 companies like Sears, Target, K-mart, Rite Aid, CVS, Wal-mart, Publix and more. These companies would never work with a company that was anything less than reputable.

Please beware of these scams. There are some legit home businesses out there so be careful. Look for companies in business over 10 years. Look for companies with a needed product or service, something you would be proud to represent. Look for companies that have a national reputation and are members of the US Chamber of Commerce.

As for those of you who say…..”I want to work from home but I don’t want to have to pay for anything”. Well, that’s great! But it will never happen. Let’s be honest, there is no such thing as a free lunch. If  it is a true honest home business you need to expect to pay. Mr. Walt Disney didn’t start the Disney empire “without paying for anything”. Neither did Mr. Sam Walton, owner of Wal-Mart.

Taking care of your child, raising her properly, teaching good manners, entertaining her, drive her around to play dates, help with homework and all that is plenty for work, and it is more than a full time job.

You can always try to sell mary kay, or something like that. You can do bookkeeping for some small firm, you can get a part time job when your husband comes home (like in a 24 hours pharmacy or whatever).

I dont know what you do now... depending on your education and your current job you can do a lot more.

And dont beat yourself up about not helping your husband pay the bills because no 6 figure salary can pay for your job as a mother.

you can be a secret shopper. I don't want to put the info out here but I make an extra $50-100 per month and I get to eat for free. It's fun. Look into it for sure.

First of all, staying home to raise your child is a huge contribution.  The money you'll save on daycare alone will help a lot.

You could also start an Ebay business from home if you wanted.  But really, just focus on your baby for now.  Good luck and congratulations.

Online jobs are good, you could go back to work when he or she is in school if that works out for you guys. I'm a college student but when I was little my mom stayed home for the first year then went back to work- I have a lot of respect for her now and she makes me work super hard in school and makes me feel as if I can achieve my dreams. You could sell Lia Sophia jewelry or Pampered Chef products.

You get to choose your hours which would be mostly nights and weekends by scheduling parties with your customers to demonstrate the products and sell.

You could find an online company like Blue Cross/Blue Shield Insurance where they send you paperwork and you basically key in claims into their system for them to file.

me and my friends all have this problem too. it's pretty hard to find anything that doesn't get in the way with being available to your baby. it also depends if you're breastfeeding or not. if you are, pumping and all that isn't as easy as they make it seem in magazines and all. it's also hard when your baby isn't sleeping through the night. you might be too sleepy! and trust me, the sleep deprivation you feel with the first is the hardest. it took me a year to get the hang of parenthood with my first. i wanted to work but just couldn't even get myself together enough to go on play dates or clean the house. you have to relearn how to live. so what i'm saying is (unless you have a nanny and housekeeper) don't set high expectations for yourself beyond taking care of your baby b/c it really is 24/7 and exhausting, and you don't want to make yourself depressed. what's been a good solution for me and my friends is: after the baby is a good age to be taken care of by others, like 6 mos, you could waitress a couple nights a week, work retail on weekends...one of my friends makes baby clothes. i once watched a boy after school for an hour each day and made 45/wk. work from home deals are rip-offs! good luck!

Selling Avon beauty products or Mary Kay products would invest the least time and still offers you some money making. I know that Avon has it where you can set up your own website selling their items and the profits would go to you, making it even easier. I have considered doing this too, but I am little ignorant when it comes to makeup perfume etc, so I haven't tried. Good luck.
