I recently moved to tx to live w/my aunt. the thing is this living situation is kinda uncomfortable. i want to move out but i don't have enough money saved up and the only people i know are the people i know at the agency i volunteer for. i told them some of my situation and they say they will try to help me and give me a job there. I'm thinking when i save enough money should i stay in tx or move back where i was. especially because i was going to school out there and i think it would be easier to finish there. the other thing is if i get my own place how would i pay for school. my parents were paying it before but now i wanna try to get financial aid. the problem is i live w/my aunt and would need my step dad's info. should i wait to go to school if i go back or go to school in here in tx?

  1. It sounds like going to school is most important right now. Would your parents resume paying for your school if you moved back to where you came from? Would you have to pay out of state tuition if you went to school here? Just a few things to consider. Best of luck to you!

  2. A lot depends on where you came from.

You should consider the following though.

Right now Houston has the best economy in Texas, and Texas has the best economy in the United States. Texas didn't partake of the insane  "housing boom" as much as the rest of the nation, so now it is being spared the inevitable "housing bust".  Also while high energy prices are hurting the rest of the nation (and the pain has only started...wait till it gets cold and people up in Yankeeland have to pay for heating oil!) they are helping Texas, and especially Houston. Bottom line, it will probably be a lot easier for you to find a job here than it will wherever you came from.

Second, Texas, for the most part,  has better and cheaper schools than any other State I know of.  By going to school in Texas (especially if you are going to U.T. Austin or Texas A&M) you will be getting a better education than you would elsewhere.  This is not true of all schools...TSU is a school to be avoided, they seem to be better at producing scandals than educated graduates. However even the "second tier" schools here are very good. I was shocked when a friend of mine who worked for the FBI told me he was studying at Sam Houston State. Then he told me that they had one of the best criminology programs in the nation, and other people he worked with confirmed it.  I wouldn't have thought of SHSU as being a national leader in anything, but I was wrong.

So before you go anywhere, think about what sort of a job you could get back home, and compare the schools you will be going to.

This is an excellent site to compare colleges on.

    good luck.

P.S. In my personal experience the best place to meet people and make new friends in Houston is at Church. Almost everyone here goes to church and the folks you meet there are always friendly and outgoing.
