  1. That depends on where you live, and how many people are involved -- including their ages if you have kids.  Try including these details, and you'll probably get more useful answers.

EDIT:  Okay, that helps.  I've actually been there, about 15 years ago -- there's some gorgeous scenery.  You're near the lake, so you could find a nice nearby park and have a picnic.  I'm pretty sure there's a children's museum, and they usually have exhibits that even very young children would be interested in.   You could get tiny little life vests for the kids and take a boat ride. One thing my friends with small children like to do is get a bunch of art and craft supplies, and then have an at-home art day.  Maybe for yourself, you could get a babysitter for a day and just spend the day doing all the things you never get to do - browse in little boutiques, go to a concert or a show, or go to a day spa for some pampering.  It's your vacation too!

  2. Stock up on paper plates and cups so you won't have to worry about dishes.  Order take-out often or eat out.  If you have the money, hire a maid.  Not having to worry about household chores is one of the best parts of a vacation unless you like to do housework.  Sleep in.  Since you may be sleep deprived with the little ones, being able to sleep in and take naps could be the best part of your staycation.  If possible, don't let people at work know you will be in town because they may try to call you at home.  You may want to let the answering machine take the work calls during your staycation and if they keep nagging you, change your phone number or go to a hotel.
