You do have to get to the reef for great snorkeling but don't just hire a man to take you. I would suggest that you go with a registered tour group. No need for unnecessary risks on your vacation.

One needs to get a ways off the beach to get to the reef for the best snorkeling experience. It was simple to hire a man with a boat to take a small group of us out.

jamaica's pretty much amazing. you don't have to go far to get a good place to snorkel. ocho rios is pretty good for snorkeling no matter where you are.
