Question:

Staying in convents?

I'm an American student who will be in Europe for 5 months studying. I'd like to travel while I'm here, even if I'm on my own. I thought that a safe/cheap place to stay would be convents with guest houses. I have found a couple websites that list places in Italy, but I was wondering if anyone would have information about other European countries as well, like France, Ireland, or Poland?

Are there websites that would list something like this?

Thanks for your help!!

  1. I found some useful links for you. I hope you will find the places you want!

  2. I have stayed in several monasteries/convents in the past.

It is often possible, but the brothers/sisters do not really appreciate it when you come for a few days of partying in town.

If you want to spend a few days of reflection and go into town once or twice while there, OK, but going there because of going to town, rather not. At least that was my impression then.

Maybe they have changed policies, or are more open in other parts of Europe, so try contacting the convents you want to visit, telling them what you want.

In the past you could get a list with all hostels of certain kinds of monasteries, like all Benedict and associated houses, but I do not know how it is arranged now.
