Staying safe in Quito?

What do I need to know to stay safe when I study abroad in Quito Ecuador?

Know which areas to avoid-some are so bad the police won't go there. The locals will help you. And pickpockets are very active in many of the markets. Don't carry anything in a shoulder bag like a camera or purse. But I had no problems as a little caution works.

oh my...why did you pick there? I'd ask your doctor about shots...don't drink the water...don't go out after dark...watch where you go...i'd stay in the states or pick somewhere in europe.
