Question:

Steam cleaning help remove chemicals?

This may seem like a really dumb question, but here goes..

We are having new carpet installed next week in our 7mo old son's room and our family room. I don't like what I have read about VOC emmition and the effects it could have on our little one's respiratory system (maybe I'm just being paranoid, but oh well). I know we should air the rooms out a bit before he sleeps there, but do you think that steam cleaning the carpets will help rid the VOCs faster? I know it seems dumb to clean a brand new carpet, but do you think it would help?

  1. I do not think steam cleaning will help.  You need to just air out the room use a fan and I would not sleep in there for a few days. You could make it fun for him to camp somewhere else in the home.close off that area if possible open windows and a box fan

  2. It can't hurt-you won't have to use any cleaning solutions but you could add a little vinegar to the hottest water you have when you clean the carpet to help rid the smell.

  3. The VOCs are actually inside the solid part of the fibres. Steam cleaning only cleans the surface of each fibre, not under the surface. I don't think it would help a bit.

  4. If you could buy and air purifier for the baby's room, this will help.

run it on high at first and then when he is sleeping on low. But airing out the room first is a very good idea.

Air purifiers that are good for 1500 sq.feet are not very expensive, I paid only $60. for mine at the Bay in Canada. It is the Bionair make and I think they sell all over the world.

You could use it year round, day and night.
