Steam introduces Greenlight – Video Games Update
Valve has announced that a new service for indie developers called Greenlight, which will allow them to easily publish their game if there is enough community demand for it, will be coming soon to Steam.
Greenlight is a service, somewhat similar to Kickstarter, where upstart indie developers post information, screenshots, concept art and videos about the game they are creating or interested in creating. Steam users will then rate the project, provide feedback
and ultimately decide if the game gets published or not.
If the project gets enough positive reviews from Steam users, Valve will publish the game on Steam. "For many stores, there is a team that reviews entries and decides what gets past the gates. We're approaching this from a different angle: The community
should be deciding what gets released. After all, it's the community that will ultimately be the ones deciding which release they spend their money on," stated Valve on the Steam Greenlight page.
Valve has stated on its Greenlight page that, “We are most interested in finding the games that people want, not requiring them to always hit a specific number of votes." Proving once again that it cares about its community as now the gamers have the choice
to vote for which game should be published on Steam.
This is great news for new developers because now they have a portal where they can advertise their work in progress game to over four million gamers while getting information and feedback for their projects. This saves them the trouble of dealing with publishers
for the distribution and marketing of their game.
If they listen to the community and create something that the gamers like and want the project will get a green-light quickly and they will be able to sell their game on steam in no time. If the project does not get enough hits which are required for it
to be green-lit, it will stay on the Greenlight page where the developer can make changes to it so that gamers get interested in it.
Valve has announced that Greenlight is set to start by the end of August and is encouraging new developers to try it out once the service launches.
