Where can I buy a steel frame bmx or mountain bike for $200 or less? What companies make reliable high weight capacity bikes up to 350 or more lbs?

  1. STAY AWAY FROM DISCOUNT STORE BIKES! THEY ARE NEVER A GOOD CHOICE!

The material that the frame is made from has little to do with the load carrying capacity (until you get into very expensive stuff).

Your problem is going to be trying to find a bike that can hold the weight at the price you want to pay. Ultimately, you won't find one... not new, anyway.

I suggest that you seek out a used bike- perhaps from 1999 to about 2003- that is in good condition and has NO suspension. Suspension on a bike is intended for riders 140 to 170 pounds. Any more than that you'll bottom out and damage the shocks. Some models to look for are Raleigh M series bikes (including Mojave), Diamondback Response, KHS Alite series, and others that were originally in the $400-500 price range when new. There are zillions of them in newspapers and yard sales for your target price or less.

BEFORE you apply that kind of weight, take the bike to a shop and have them retension the wheels (they'll know what you mean) and if there is a suspension fork have them remove it and install a rigid fork. Make certain that everything is in good working order and if you need direction on shifting or braking this is the time to ask.

    Good luck!
