Question:

Steel recycling - is there anything more we can do?

I've seen articles encouraging us to recycle our food/drinks cans, both steel and aluminium.

My understanding was that the *steel* that we throw in our ordinary waste bin is already removed for recycling magnetically.

With that in mind - is there any reason to sort it before recycling? What more can we do to ensure that more steel is recycled? / less goes to landfill?

  1. My guess would be that by presorting recycled items from garbage will help the efficiency and reduce some of the costs involved in sorting.

  2. dont worry too much the Gypsys will ensure somewhere down the line it gets to a scrapyard

  3. dont worry not a major concern

  4. There is an incentive to recycle steel because steel is worth something.  When you sort your recycling as a responsible citizen you make it easier for the place where you live to handle and benefit from those things which I would expect ultimately reduce your taxes even if it's a small amount.  Recycling is good for the earth and we all need to do whatever we can!

  5. the biggest problem with recycling steel in the US is that there are few steel mills left in the US.

with the rising oil cost it is not profitable to ship scrap like cans or other thin steel scrap to china for recycling

  6. dont know where u live. but sorting trash..doesnt hapen in 95 persent of trash....and steel is so cheap...2 or 3 cents a pound.saving up a few hundred pounds is a waste of time and money

  7. If something is presorted that's more efficient because it doesn't need to be handled as many times.

  8. Check out sites from steel corporations that use recycled steel rather than ore.

Steel is the most recycled product in our country.
