Steele Von Hoff holds overall lead in third stage of Tour of Gippsland 2011 - Cycling News
Genesys Wealth Advisers team’s Steele Von Hoff showed a tremendous effort in the third Criterium stage of Tour of Grippsland 2011 in San Remo on Thursday, July 28. He also wrapped up overall leader’s yellow jersey.
Von Hoff took the total of 54 minutes and 40 seconds to cover the distance of 40 kilometres.
Jack Haig (MTBA) was in good form and launched an attack to take part in the leading riders but failed to hold his pace and grabbed 42nd place with the difference of 9 seconds ahead of Nicholas Schultz and Edward White.
After four laps, the three cyclists made their first breakaway including, Steele Von Hoff (Genesys Wealth Advisers), Richard Lang (Jayco AIS) and Patrick Shaw (Genesys Wealth Advisers). All of them working together and build a lead of a few seconds while
Van Hoff took the first sprint.
Michael England (Team Budget Forklifts) and Darcy Rosenlund showed a brilliant effort and took the second sprint after the 6th lap. Philip Grenfell launched an attack and beat Patrick Shaw and Kyle Marwood in the third sprint. Richard Lang increased
his pace and managed to gain a lead in the fourth and Anthony Giacoppo took the fifth sprint.
In the 14th lap of the stage, Nathan Haas gained a lead and took first place in the sixth and seventh sprint. Grenfell again increased his pace and took the points in the last sprint ahead of Hass.
However, in the final kilometres, Grenfell (BIKEBUG.COM) attacked but was unable to maintain his lead and grabbed the runner-up spot and Ryan Macanally (SP Ausnet) was in third place with the same timing of Van Hoff. 41 cyclists crossed the distance of the
stage with the same timing of sprinter.
The two cyclists John Freiberg (Team Budget Forklifts) and Pascal Richer (VCC New Caledonia) were disqualified from the stage. Chris Jongewaard (Jayco 2XU) took the title of Best Young Rider.
Von Hoff took the overall lead with the timing of 3 hours, 16 minutes while Grenfell was in second spot with difference of 7 seconds.
Nathan Hass finished third with the difference of 11 second ahead of Patrick Shaw.
The next stage will start in San Remo and end in Warragul. All the cyclists will cover the distance of 102 kilometres.
