Steele Von Hoff wins final stage as Shaw celebrates overall lead at Tour of the Murray 2011
Genesys Wealth Advisers team’s Steele Von Hoff showed a tremendous performance throughout the stage and managed to take first place in the 15th and final stage of Tour of the Murray 2011 in Mildura on Saturday, September 4.
Patrick Shaw took the best reward of his victory after wearing the yellow leader’s jersey. He was quite happy with his performance and said, “It was hard to hold on to the jersey because of all the intermediate sprints (131) and the depth of talent in the
field, but my Genesys teammates were fantastic. For me, winning was the icing on the cake."
Philip Grenfell of Bikebug.com was runner-up with the same timing as Hoff and Ben Kersten of Swan Hill Heart of the Murray finished third ahead of Aaron Gate of Rabodirect New Zealand and Cameron Karwowski.
The stage was difficult for the cyclists because it contain 14 sprints (28 laps). After two laps of the stage the three cyclists made their first breakaway including Patrick Shaw (Genesys Wealth Advisers), Ben Kersten (Swan Hill Heart of the Murray) and
Adam Phelan (Drapac Professional Cycling).
Patrick Shaw took the two sprints of the stage ahead of the other cyclists. In the sixth lap of the stage, Johnnie Walker launched an attack and easily beat Shaw. The other three cyclists got away including, Ben Kersten, Adam Phelan and Alexander Ray (Swan
Hill Heart of the Murray).
Kersten managed to increase his pace and took points ahead of Adam Phelan. Aaron Gate took the tenth lap and Adam Phelan took the 12th lap. In the last lap of the stage, Jake Magee showed a good effort and took the final sprint ahead of Tansley
and White.
Alexander Ray took the title of best aggressive cyclists. Patrick Shaw took the overall lead with a timing of 18 hours, 16 minutes and 33 seconds.
He further added, "The Gippsland victory reinvigorated me and I am in a terrific place right now, with my teammates at Genesys, life is so much more fulfilling."
The stage winner, Von Hoff was in second place with 2 seconds behind Shaw. Ben Kersten grabbed third place with a difference of 29 seconds ahead of Adam Phelan and Michael Freiberg.
Johnnie Walker (V Australia) took the overall sprint standing with 90 points while Patrick Shaw was in second with 79 points. Hoff also took a lead in the Criterium classification with 65 points ahead of Kersten. Joseph Lewis of Bikebug.com secured first
place in Hill Climb standing with 13 points ahead of Tansley and Von Hoff.
