Steering Wheel Locks?

I have a 1998 toyota camry and when I hit a water puddle, my steering wheel locks. Is there a reason why? My 1993 Camry did the same thing, but I traded it in thinking it was just the car, but come to find out I am having the same problem with my 1998.

  1. More than likely, the steering is not locking. I suspect that it just gets very hard to steer. If that is the case, avoid the puddle! Water on the power steering belt can temporarily take away power assist causing hard steering.

  2. Sounds like there is a wiring harness or wires or connection getting wet then it shorts out and the steering wheel locks.I'd try to check under the car and under the hood for sensors or wires or wiring harness's that could and would get wet via driving over puddles.Plus check for frayed , burnt or bare wires or bare connections. When you do find the possible cause and its a harness or wire that isnt being protected from moister then try adding insolation via the proper tape and maybe a extra piece of wiring harness tubing or fixing or replacing the faulty wire or bad connections.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way you might want to find out if the dealership has any recalls etc on this issue.

  3. you ll have to be a bit more specific than that....when hitting a puddle at speed the car can aquaplane, meaning the Tyre's aren't in contact to the road causing it not to steer correctly if that's what you mean
