Question:

Steering during dmv test?

I hate using the hand over hand method. I'm a lot more comfortable with my own method, which is simply turning the wheel by using a sort of shuffle of the hands I guess you could say. It's hard to describe. But it's so much easier for me than the hand over hand method. I actually almost got into an accident today using hand over hand for the first time... my own method is so much more comfortable and I make much better turns.

Will they fail me if I dont use hand over hand?

  1. I don't think the Examiner will fail you because you don't exactly steer hand over hand. As long as you steer with two hands on the wheel and make smooth turns and lane changes you should be alright.

You get demerits from making minor errors, such as forgetting to shoulder check, shoulder checking too late, signalling to early or too late, making wide turns, cutting turns, stopping over the lines, etc.

You will automatically FAIL the test if you go over the curb on turns or while parking, if you don't fully stop at intersections with Stop signs, if you don't stop before turning right on a red light (this is not legal everywhere by the way, so check with the DMV). You will also fail if you speed, so keep your speed JUST UNDER the speed limit, not too slow though, unless traffic, road or weather conditions demand it.

If you don't pass the first time (you'll be nervous), just go back and book another test. You'll eventually pass as long as you follow the rules and use good observation skills and get lots of practice (60 hrs recommended) before your test.

Good Luck.........luck is when preparation meets opportunity!

  2. i would definitely stick with the hand over hand method for your test, after that, do whatever you want.  Just practice it a little more to be comfortable with it.  I mean, the test only takes like a half hour, so you won't be doing it that long...

  3. The hand over hand method is considered the safest way to make a turn...................
