Question:

Steering wheel acting crazy?

I drive a Toyota Highlander. Sometimes on wet pavement, the steering wheel will not turn to the direction I steer and acts like it has its own mind. Everytime it only lasts a couple seconds and back to normal. But that's scary enough. What can cause this malfunction?

  1. bad power steering pump..or bad rack and pinion

  2. Your power steering belt is loose. In wet conditions the belt 'slips' on the power steering pully, effectively loosing all power assist until it dries enough to turn the pump. Now would be a good time to replace the belt.

  3. it could be anything to do wit ur streering... I had a sort of same prob but mine would pull me to left for no reason and I didnt need a wheel alighnment. I needed my cv joints done but the guys told me first it was the wheel bearings but it wasnt.

I would suggest taking it to a mech and get 2 or 3 qoutes done...

  4. Reread Pedro's suggestions.   Either you are not getting enough assist from the power steering,   or you are binding somewhere.    First step is to be sure the PS  fluid is filled to the proper level

  5. Check the fluid and then check and or replace the power steering belt and that will solve your problem.
