Stefan Nystrand conquers Men’s 50m freestyle heats: Day six – British Gas Swimming Championships
Stefan Nystrand of Sweden conquered preliminary rounds of the Men’s 50m freestyle on day six of the 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre on Thursday, March 8.
The British Gas Championship acts as Olympic Selection Trials and provides a chance to their national players to qualify for the 2012 London Games.
The 30-year-old Nystrand dominated the qualification round of shortest freestyle discipline as he clocked an effort of 22.54 seconds. With his tremendous efforts, he remained 0.07 seconds ahead of his teammate, Petter Stymne, who qualified into the semi-final by posting a time of 22.61 seconds. Adam Brown of Hatfield was just 0.02 seconds slower from overwhelming the second best qualifying swimmer and clocked 22.63 seconds for third position.
The second event of the session was Women’s 800m freestyle qualifying rounds, where none other than Britain great swimmer, Rebecca Adlington dictated terms to her challengers.
The 23-year-old Adlington dominated the prelims of sixteen-lap freestyle event as she touched the wall with the timing of 8 minutes and 26.62 seconds. Her scintillating effort remained almost six seconds ahead of Grainne Murphy of Ireland, who occupied second best spot of the event by producing an effort of 8 minutes and 32.85 seconds.
The third best spot of the swim was obtained by Eleanor Faulkner of Co Sheffield, who was 0.31 seconds slower and hit the finishing blockade with the timing of 8 minutes and 33.16 seconds.
Third event of the session was Men’s 100m butterfly prelims, where Serbia’s Milorad Cavic served notice of his talent and reached the semi-final with an effort of 52.38 seconds. His immaculate effort remained just 0.07 seconds ahead of Korea’s Gyucheol Chang, who tapped the finishing end with an effort of 52.45 seconds for second position.
The Korean veteran was chased by Konrad Czerniak of Poland, who suffered a deficit of 0.55 seconds and earned third position of the event with the timing of 53.00 seconds.
The arena enjoyed gruelling performances of all participants in their respective disciplines whereas these finalists will compete with each other in the playoffs to prove their mettle for the podium.
