Stefan Nystrand excels in Men’s 50m freestyle semi-finals: Day six – European LC Championships
Stefan Nystrand of Sweden excelled in the semi-finals of Men’s 50m freestyle on sixth day of the ongoing European Long Course Championships in Debrecen, Hungary on Saturday, May 26.
The 30-year-old Nystrand stunned the aquatic crowd by seizing the top qualification spot of the 50m discipline. With his alluring efforts, he devastated hopes of the fastest qualifying swimmer, Frederick Bousquet of France and entered the playoff as strongest contender for gold medal.
Nystrand stayed nearly one stroke faster from his closest competitor and posted a time of 22.06 seconds.
 With his stupendous efforts, he remained 0.14 seconds ahead of Andriy Govorov of Ukraine, who reached the playoff as second best finisher by submitting a time of 22.20 seconds.
Govorov was trailed by Marco Orsi and Bousquet, who failed to overpower each other on the finishing end and secured third fastest spot in the semi-final. Bousquet tried hard to meet expectations of his supporters but settled on the finishing end as third best swimmer by ending in a joint finish with the timing of 22.22 seconds.
The French swimmer was chased by Ari-Pekka Liukkonen of Finland, who stayed only 0.02 seconds apart and transpired on the finishing end with the timing of 22.24 seconds for fifth position.
Following that, Katinka Hosszu of Hungary proved her mettle in the Women’s 200m butterfly semi-finals by sustaining her fastest qualification spot.
The 23-year-old Hosszu stayed nearly one and a half body length ahead of her closest challenger and posted a time of 2 minutes and 07.03 seconds.
She was chased by Martina Granstroem of Sweden, who finished her swim in second best place by posting a time of 2 minutes and 08.65 seconds.
Third position of the discipline was occupied by Zsuzsanna Jakabos of Hungary, who was 0.44 seconds apart and emerged on the finishing end with the timing of 2 minutes and 09.09 seconds.
Jakabos was followed by Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain, who finished fourth in the event with the timing of 2 minutes and 09.14 seconds.
In addition, the session came to an end after the completion of all planned events.
