Stefan Sorak grapples Men’s 1500m freestyle gold: Day two – 2011 Swimming World Cup, Moscow
Stefan Sorak of Serbia presented his smothering efforts by grappling the title of Men’s 1500m freestyle short course swim on day two of the 2011 Swimming World Cup in Moscow, Russia on Wednesday, October 19.
Moscow is the third juncture of seven-stop World Cup series organised by the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA), which is the international aquatics spot controlling body.
The 19-year-old Sorak confronted well-built battle from his team-member, Velimir Stjepanovic, who laid his eyes on the title of sixty-lap freestyle discipline. Stjepanovic tried his best to surpass his team-mate’s effort, but failed to answer Sorak’s determination as he clinched gold medal of 1500m event.
Sorak’s commendable start attributed towards providing him a considerable lead over his competitors in the first lap, while the Serbian completed initial 100 metres of the race in 55.62 seconds. He was followed by 18-year-old Stjepanovic, who enveloped the same distance in 57.08 seconds.
The leading Russian swimmer continued to serve notice of his talent by extending his lead in every lap of the event. He completed his first half of the race in 7 minutes and 25.38 seconds and remained about six seconds ahead of his toughest challenger, who clocked 7 minutes and 31.94 seconds for the same distance.
Stjepanovic elevated his efforts in the second half, where he strived to recover the lead and engulfed the efforts of his team-mate, but the damage was done and he fell short to accomplish the gold medal.
Sorak’s persistent efforts in the distant freestyle event placed him on the podium for gold medal as he produced an effort of 15 minutes and 04.07 seconds. Stjepanovic was 2.76 seconds slower than champion and secured the podium for silver medal by posting a time of 15 minutes and 06.83 seconds.
Subsequently, Nikolay Bulakhov of Russia emerged on the podium for third position as he submitted an effort of 15 minutes and 08.60 seconds.
Sorak’s incredible effort in the distant freestyle event thrilled the crowd while the podium finishers received their medals after the completion of the session. In addition, the championship came to an end after the completion of all scheduled events.
