Stefan Terblanche all set to make record 100th Currie Cup appearance – Rugby News
South African professional Rugby Union player, Stefan Terblanche, is all set to make his record 100th Currie Cup appearance. Terblanche plays for the South African provincial Rugby Union side, Natal Sharks, in South Africa’s domestic competition
called the Currie Cup.
Sharks upcoming 2011 ABSA Currie Cup encounter against the Platinum Leopards will be his 100th Currie Cup appearance. He will become the only player in the history of the South African Rugby who has played 100 games in both Super Rugby and Currie
Cup competitions.
Sharks head coach, John Plumtree, has named Terblanche in his match day 22. Plumtree announced his squad for their upcoming encounter on Thursday, October 6.
Sharks are the defending Currie Cup champions and they are currently placed at the second spot on the 2011 Currie Cup table with 38 points. Out of their 12 games in the season, they have lost just four and won eight games. Out of these eight games, they
have won try bonus points in five.
The 36-year-old Terblanche started his professional Rugby Union career with Boland Cavaliers. He played 66 games for them before joining the Natal Sharks in 1999. He remained at Sharks until the end of 2003 season. During his first stay at Sharks, he made
42 appearances and scored 161 points for them.
During the 2003/04 season, Terblanche joined the Welsh professional Rugby Union club, Ospreys. He made 87 appearances for Ospreys and remained with them until the end of the 2006/07 season.
Mossel Bay born, Terblanche rejoined South African Rugby Union club, Sharks in 2007. He made his international debut for the Springboks in 1998. Terblanche is a versatile backs player, who can play at fullback, centre and winger positions. He made 37 international
appearances for Springboks and scored 95 points. Besides this, he has also represented South Africa at Under-21s level.
Plumtree has named Gouws Prinsloo at the full back position for their last game before the knockout phase against the Leopards, forcing Terblanche to start the match from the bench. Sharks will be eyeing a bonus point victory over the Leopards to confirm
their place in the play offs of the 2011 Currie Cup tournament.
