Stefani Croce of Italy grabs early lead in first round of Sicilian Ladies Italian Open – Golf news
Italian Stefani Croce is now leading the first round of the latest Sicilian Ladies Italian Open on a bright sunny day at the scenic Il Picciolo Golf Club. Carding five birdies without dropping a shot, Croce is now five-under and is all set to grab the lead
at the end of the day.
Englishwoman, Trish Johnson and Australian, Karen Lunn are poised at second place with their scores of four-under so far and have just made the turn for their respective back nines. Lunn also remained bogey-less while veteran, Johnson, succumbed to two early
bogeys at the start of her back nine. She came back with a birdie at the 12th and will be keeping a close watch on her tee-shots to avoid any more of the dreadful bogeys.
Spaniard, Belen Mozo made the headlines earlier in the day when she carded three consecutive birdies to edge past the rest of the field in the morning. The 2006 British Amateur champion from Cadiz Mozo stumbled on a bogey on the first hole of the back nine
and another at par-three, 15th. She is now sharing the fourth place alongside Klara Spilkova and Beth Allen.
Another group of five players are sharing the seventh spot including Frenchwoman, Barbara Genuini, Italian Giulia Sergas and Veronica Zorzi, England’s Florentyna Parker, Anja Monke of Germany and Caroline Rominger of Switzerland with their scores of one-under.
England’s Melissa Reid, one of the Solheim Cup team members, has so far carded a humble round of even-par, falling for bogey at par-three, 3rd and scoring just one birdie on the back nine. The 23-year-old Englishwoman played a phenomenal role
in European team’s victory at the Solheim Cup and is poised to make it big on the tour for the rest of the season.
Reid said, “I will probably have to win three more tournaments including Dubai to catch Ai and win the Henderson Money List but it’s definitely one of my goals from the start of the year. It should be a good battle with a few that could get close including
Caroline Hedwall and Diana Luna’s quite high up there as well, but if I play well I will give myself a chance.”
Reid has earned a total of €258,981 from 15 tournaments and is second on the Henderson Money List.
