Stefanie Voegele strains past Caroline Garcia in final qualifier – Family Circle Cup 2012
Seeded at number nine in the qualifiers, Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele took down the 16th seed French opponent, Caroline Garcia, to earn a spot in the main draw of the Family Circle Cup. The contest took place on Sunday,
with the 22-year-old Swiss belting a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, victory over the promising French teenager.
18-year-old Garcia took one hour and 49 minutes of play to turn the tables on Garcia and making through to the main rounds of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier-level event in Charleston, USA. He recovered from a one-set
deficit with great masterly and reeled off the following two sets to register her first victory over Garcia.
The 143rd ranked French was off to an excellent start in the matchup and bagged the opening set early to get into the driving seat. However, her sloppy game play in the following sets led to her down fall. Garcia kept
spilling unforced errors in the last two sets, giving sufficient opening for the ninth seed Swiss to make a comeback in t the contest. Voegele made no mistake and availed most of her chances to change the course of the match in her favour.
The ninth seed delivered 61 per cent of her serve on target and won 41 out of 58 first serve points en route to victory. Garcia followed her with 32 out of her 42 points but she was better than her opponent with her return game.
She secured 17 return points, while the Swiss winner registered 10, still finishing on the winning side in the end.
Conventional game play was witnessed in the opening four games, with both players sticking on to their serves. Voegele made the first move and broke in the fifth game to lead 3-2. An absolute onslaught from the 18-year-old French
was seen afterwards, as she nailed two successive serve breaks to race past her opponent to 6-4.
More cautious tennis was seen from Voegele in the following set and she stuck to her basics, avoiding giving away easy points to her opponent. She registered a crucial serve break to close out the second set at 6-4, levelling the
match up at one-all.
Once getting into her winning groove, the ninth seed Swiss didn’t look back in the decisive set. She stung serve breaks in the third and fifth games to rocket away to victory at 6-2, booking a berth in the main rounds of the Family
Circle Cup.
