Stefano Domenicali: Ferrari must step up a gear for 2012 Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari team principal, Stefano Domenicali says that they must step up a gear and maximize their potential for 2012 Spanish Grand Prix.
The Scarlet team is standing at fourth place in the constructors’ championship in the season so far with 45 points ahead of Mercedes AMG. Moreover, their current position can be consider quite an achievement as the Italian team expressed that they would
struggle in the opening few races of the season after the pre-season testing programme.
Ferrari’s competitiveness can be much attributed to the performance of their driver, Fernando Alonso who has been able to score reasonable points in the season until now.
The Spaniard took an impressive victory in the second race at Sepang. In addition, he secured fifth place finish in the season opener after staring from 12th position in the grid while secured 9th and 7th places in the third and fourth race.
Although Domenicali said that they cannot feel contended with their start of the season, nevertheless, he said that they have managed well to secure some crucial championship points after the first four races. Besides, he also praised the performance of
Alonso who is currently at fifth position in the drivers’ standing.
“Clearly we cannot be happy with the way our season began but, after the winter tests, we knew the first four races would be very tough,” Domenicali said. “We managed to limit the damage, especially in the Drivers' championship, in which Fernando Alonso
is fifth, just ten points off the leader.”
Additionally, he said that they need to make the substantial developments and the necessary preparations so as to improve the pace of F2012 in the European season. He added that they have been trying to bring out the best in them to make their car more competent
for the upcoming races.
“However, it is equally clear that now we must step up a gear, right from the next race. Our engineers are well aware of this and are working day and night to give our drivers a much more competitive car than we have seen on track in these first four races,”
he said.
