Stefano Domenicali aims for a perfect performance in 2011
Team Ferrari was unable to secure either of the titles in 2010 despite the fact that they gave a strong performance in the second half of the 2010 Formula 1 season. Fernando Alonso led the drivers’ standings until the very last race but unfortunately, he
was unable to retain his lead at the Abu Dhabi GP.
The Spaniard was unable to score a sufficient amount of points mainly because of the fact that the team failed to provide him with the best possible pit strategy. Fernando pitted before the 20th lap of the race and as a result, ended up bellow
10th place. Since the Yas Marina Circuit is not the best track for overtaking, Alonso was unable to overtake the Renault of Vitaly Petrov for almost 40 laps.
This strategic mistake cost him the title but Stefano Domenicali believes that the team will not make these sorts of mistakes in 2011 as Team Ferrari is aiming for a “perfect” season.
“In 2010 we just missed out on the drivers' title with Fernando Alonso and we came third in the constructors' championship. The target for 2011 is as easy to say as it is hard to achieve - it requires taking one step forward in the drivers' championship
and two in the one for the teams,” Domenicali said at the Wrooom media event.
The team replaced Chris Dyer, who is believed to be the man behind the flawed Abu Dhabi strategy with ex-McLaren designer Pat Fry as their head of engineering. Stefano stated that this decision was not a “jerk” reaction and it a team decision.
“We know that we will have to be perfect, including in how we react to all the events that can crop up in a race weekend - because when the opponents are so strong and numerous this is what you need if you aspire to win,” he added.
Ferrari is expected to reveal its 2011 car on the 28th of January that is 3 days before the first pre-season test session in Valencia. It seems that Ferrari will reveal its car before the rest of the teams as most of the teams hope to launch their
cars at the first pre-season test session.
Stefano claims that they have a pretty good car for the 2011 season and they will aim for nothing less than the titles this time. Since they have a driver like Fernando Alonso, it would be interesting to see how the team performs against its rivals Red Bull
Racing Team and McLaren Mercedes this season.
