Stefano Domenicali believes car was the only weak point of Ferrari in 2012 – Formula 1 news
Ferrari team principal, Stefano Domenicali has said that their only weak point in the 2012 Formula 1 season was the uncompetitive car due to which their star driver, Fernando Alonso could not win the championship title.
The Italian team struggled with the design of their car throughout the pre-season testing programme this year and failed to develop a car which is competent enough as compared to their main rival, Red Bull Racing.
Nevertheless, Alonso performed incredibly well even with the incompetent car and led the drivers’ championship for quite a long time in this season.
However, he lost his lead to his major opponent, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull who remained at the top of the standings during the last few races and finally claimed his third championship title by a three points lead over the Spaniard. Moreover, the veteran
German driver seemed to be invincible as he had the fastest car in the field.
On the other hand, Domenicali said that even though they scored points with great consistency in the last four grands prix, but they lacked performance because of their car which was not competitive enough to match the pace of their contender.
Furthermore, he said that they struggled with their qualifying pace in most of the races which made it difficult for Alonso and his teammate, Felipe Massa to secure good positions.
“It's a fact that over the last four races we are the team that scored most points,” Domenicali said.
“You correctly say that we did not have the fastest car, above all at the beginning of the season then maybe in the second half of the season we were not able to improve car. For sure this is something we need to work harder in order to improve it, and we
have of course got ideas because we know where we lack and of course we also know that unfortunately we're paying big price in qualifying that hurts our performance in race,” he added.
Nonetheless, he asserted that they are not feeling upset and are positively looking forward to perform well in the next season.
