Stefano Domenicali considered quitting after Abu Dhabi GP’s ‘strategic blunder’ – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was leading the 2010 drivers’ standing until the very final race but because of the ‘strategic blunder’ his team made, the two-time world champion was unable to score enough points to secure his lead.
Sebastian Vettel on the other hand won the race while Fernando was stuck behind Vitaly Petrov’s Renault for almost 40 laps.
Ferrari asked Fernando Alonso to pit from 3rd place before the 20th lap as a reply to Red Bull Racing’s strategy as they pitted Mark Webber before the 15 lap marker. Both Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso pitted
and as a result, dropped back in the grid.
This was clearly not the best strategy for the team in that scenario as they were racing for the title and taking a risk in that sort of a situation is not acceptable in any way.
As a result, it was revealed that Ferrari’s team boss Stefano Domenicali wanted to quit the team and recently, the team boss admitted that these rumours were true.
Domenicali has been leading Ferrari since 2008 and this was his first successful assault at the title. The team was unable to score a good performance in 2008 and 2009.
“This is a business and I have to manage all the different aspects, not just the sporting ones. I take care of everything, so I delegate a lot, but saying that, you have to be ready for anything especially if there have not been the results you want for
two years,” he said.
It was definitely a tough time for Ferrari as Fernando Alonso was racing for a prestigious third title. However, after a lot of thinking and hard work, Stefano finally decided that he should not back out like this and move on with his team.
“After Abu Dhabi I raised the issue personally. I wondered if it was the right thing or not to stay. I take it as a duty and I am not attached to my chair. But I came to the conclusion that stopping would be a mistake,” he added.
The team faced a lot of problems after Felipe Massa’s fatal injury in 2009 but the team came back well and he is hoping that they will be back once again and this time, they will not settle for anything less than the titles.
“I know the team and I think I'm the right person to capitalise on all that we have sown in recent months. From a methodological point of view, we have changed almost everything at Maranello and I am sure we will soon see the results of our hard work,” said
the team boss.
