Stefano Domenicali insists Ferrari had to ask for clarification from FIA – Formula 1 news
Ferrari team principal, Stefano Domenicali has said that they had to ask for the necessary clarifications from FIA regarding Sebastian Vettel’s overtake in the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix to satisfy their fans, sponsors and broadcasters.
Vettel successfully won his third consecutive world drivers’ championship title after securing 6th place finish in the season finale. Moreover, he stood just 3 points ahead of his major rival, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari.
However, a controversy arose after the final race that the veteran German driver illegally overtook Jean-Eric Vergne of Toro Rosso during the yellow flag as the warning lights were flashing in his cockpit.
Resultantly, the Scarlet team got a lot of email from its fans from different parts of the world who were asking them to enlighten them on the matter.
Therefore, Ferrari wrote an unofficial letter to FIA so as to get the needed explanation about the issue. In response, FIA stated that Vettel’s pass was completely legal and there was nothing wrong with it.
Eventually, the Italian team considered the matter closed. Additionally, Domenicali expressed the reasons for making the appeal and said that they didn’t intend to demean the merit of the champion and were only interested in satisfying their fans.
“It was incumbent on us to ask the Federation for a clarification, given everything that was going round on the Internet,” he told his team's website. “We had no intention of belittling the merit of the title winner, but it was right to have the matter completely
cleared up. The FIA has replied and we have noted their answer and now consider the matter to be closed.”
In addition, he said that there are few areas in the sport which are very difficult to understand. Hence, they have to go to FIA for the enlightenment.
“It's always difficult to understand where the limits are in a sport like Formula 1, especially on the technical front,” he said.
Besides, he said that they are not feeling disappointed over the result of this season and are keenly looking forward to come up stronger with a more competitive car in the next year.
