Ferrari team principal, Stefano Domenicali has said that tyre management is going to play a crucial role in the 2013 Formula 1 season ahead and the team with better knowledge about handling the new Pirelli tyres will dominate.
After the unpleasant incidents of tyre explosion in the British Grand Prix, Pirelli have come up with stronger rear tyres in order to ensure the safety of everyone in the sport. All the teams are looking forward to test the new tyre compound at Silverstone
circuit next week.
Domenicali has asserted that they are positively eying to test the new Pirelli tyres in the next week’s test in order to improve their performance for the upcoming races. He insisted that if they want to win the championship fight in this season, they will
have to make some significant advancements regarding their tyre management.
“Now there is a very important element that has to be considered on top of the normal development of the car and that is understanding how the new tyres will affect the performance of the car,” he said. “This is the most important thing that everyone has
to deal with and it is essential for us if we want to believe in fighting for the championship.”
Although, he said that he cannot make any kind of projections about the season ahead after the preceding race. However, he expressed that tyre management will surely play a major role in this year’s championship fight.
“What happens from Hungary onwards, I don't know because we know what the construction is and we know what the compounds are but we have never tested them together,” he added.
Currently, the Italian squad are standing at third place in the constructors’ championship with 180 points. Moreover, they are ahead of Lotus and behind their main rival, Mercedes.
Meanwhile, their driver, Fernando Alonso is at second place in the drivers’ standings with 123 points. Besides, he is ahead of Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus and behind his major opponent, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing. In contrast, his teammate, Felipe Massa
is at 7th place in the drivers’ championship with 57 points.
