Stefano Galvani, Charles-Antoine Brezac cruise into the second round – Guzzini Challenger 2011
Stefano Galvani defeats Artem Smirnov 6-2, 6-0
Italian Stefano Galvani, ranked 226th in the world, thrashed world number 281 Artem Smirnov of Ukraine in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 in the first round at the Guzzini Challenger in Recanati, Italy on Tuesday. The Italian
took just 57 minutes to beat his opponent.
Galvani broke the Ukrainian in the third and fifth game of the opening set to clinch it 6-2. The Italian delivered 46 percent of the first serves and three aces in the first set. The 34-year-old bulldozed his opponent with big
first serves, winning an incredible 91 percent of the first service points. Galvani won two of the three break points he received in the opening set.
The Italian crushed his opponent in the second set, breaking the Ukrainian three times and claiming six straight games to win the set 6-0. The Padova resident served just 40 percent of the first deliveries but he won a whopping
78 percent of the second service points and 42 percent of the first return points in the second set. The right-handed capitalised on three of the nine break point opportunities he created on Smirnov’s serve in the second set.
Galvani is drawn to face top seed Rainer Schuettler of Germany in the second round.
Charles-Antoine Brezac beats Miloslav Mecir 6-4, 6-4
World number 296 Charles-Antoine Brezac of France dismissed world number 304 Miloslav Mecir of Slovakia in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the second round. The match lasted for one hour and 21 minutes.
Brezac and Mecir broke each other once in the first eight games of the opening set to equalise the score at 4-4. The Frenchman broke Mecir again in the ninth game and served out the set at 5-4. The 25-year-old fired four aces and
amazingly claimed all the twelve first service points. Brezac also won ten of the 23 first return points in the opening set.
The French needed a single break of serve in the second set to grab it 6-4. Brezac fired 68 percent of the first serves and three aces in the second set. The unseeded won a good percentage of points on his serve, claiming 76 percent
of the first service points and 88 percent of the second service points. The Frenchman capitalised on the only break point opportunity he created on Mecir’s serve in the second set.
Brezac will take on world number 197 Frederik Nielsen of Demark in the round of 16.
