Stefanos Paparounas wins Men’s 3m Springboard semi-final – Swimming news
Stefanos Paparounas of Greece won the semi-final of Men’s 3m Springboard on day two of the FINA/MIDEA Diving World Series 2013 in Guadalajara, Mexico on Saturday, May 18.
The Greek player showed no mercy to his opponents in the semi-final of 3m springboard event. He was considerably behind Mexican diver, Yahel Castillo from the start but with his commendable form in the second half, he managed to qualify as the top contender
for the title.
With his unrelenting efforts, Paparounas was way behind Yahel in the first three rounds but managed to cover the lead in fourth round.
Castillo remained prominently ahead of his competitor from the start as he ended his first round with an effort of 83.30 points. His notable effort was followed by Paparounas, who stayed nearly 11 points behind and ended his initial round with a score of
72.00 points.
The Mexican player continued his nerve-wrecking form in the second round, where he accomplished 86.70 points. Subsequently, Paparounas improved his efforts in the second round but managed to score only 79.05 points.
Similarly, Castillo’s efforts deteriorated in the third round where he managed to add a total of 62.70 points on the board while Paparounas managed to gain 76.50 points.
Following that, Paparounas secured 73.50 points each in the fourth and fifth round while Castillo got 49.00 and 70.50 points respectively.
The Greek swimmer continued his efforts in the last round and added 79.80 points to the board while Castillo added 87.75 points.
With his astonishing pace, Paparounas managed to qualify as the top contender for gold medal as he gathered 454.35 points.
He was followed by Castillo, who stayed almost 15 points behind and entered the playoff as second best finisher with an effort of 439.95 points.
Oleg Kolodiy of Ukraine, who occupied a total of 411.25 points, obtained third fastest qualification spot of the event.
Fourth best spot of the event was secured by Julian Sanchez of Mexico, who managed to secure 393.05 points in the semi-final.
Furthermore, the divers were extremely happy with their efforts while Paparounas expressed his desire of occupying the title.
