Steffen Deibler triumphs Men’s 50m freestyle heats - German World Championships Selection Trial
Steffen Deibler of Hamburger SC has won the Men’s 50m freestyle qualifying rounds on day one of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The 23-year-old Deibler earned the fastest qualification spot, posting a time of 22.26 seconds. His time was 0.23 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Marco Di Carli, who finished his swim in the second fastest time, by clocking 22.49 seconds. Di Carli was 0.36 seconds faster than his closest rival, Christoph Fildebrandt, who appeared as the third fastest swimmer into the finals, with a timing of 22.85 seconds.
The top qualifying swimmer was 1.35 seconds slower than Cesar Cielo’s world record of 20.91 seconds. Likewise, his timing was 1.32 seconds away from the European record of 20.94 seconds, owned by Frederick Bousquet of France. Furthermore, Deibler’s time was 0.40 seconds above Rafed El-Masri’s German mark of 21.86 seconds.
Deibler also won the gold medal in the 50m freestyle event at the 2010 Eindhoven European Short Course Championships. The German champion won four gold medals in the events of the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly and the 4*50m medley relay.
Steffen’s timing now ranks 15th in the 2011 early world rankings, whereas, he wishes to improve his timing in the final of the same event.
Steffen had a prominent good start, where his quickest dive provided him a slim lead over his fellow swimmers. Then, he cruised his way to the finishing wall, staying unreachable until the first-half of the one lap race. He was then joined by Marco in the second-half, who covered his lead and engaged in a fierce battle with him. The two swimmers put in all their efforts and Deibler managed to out-touch Di Carli by 0.23 seconds and secured the fastest qualification spot.
The final of the same event will take place in the next session, where these swimmers will once again face each other, to claim the crown of the 50m event. In addition, the first two finishers will be confirmed with their spots in the German team to the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July.
