Steffen Deibler wins Men’s 50m butterfly event - German World Championships Selection Trial
Steffen Deibler has conquered the top qualification spot in the Men’s 50m butterfly on the second day of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The championship is a selection trial of German swimmers, who seek their spots in the national team to participate at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
Deibler earned the fastest qualification spot into the finals, by posting a remarkable effort of 23.46 seconds. The German champion was 0.88 seconds ahead of his following competitor, SSG Leipzig’s Hannes Heyl, who touched the wall in 24.24 seconds. Heyl
out-touched his competitor, Philip Heintz, who secured the third fastest spot in a time of 24.42 seconds.
The 23-year-old Deibler was 0.93 seconds away from the World and European record of 22.43, made by Spain’s Rafael Munoz Perez at the 2009 World Championships in Rome. He was 0.03 seconds above the German Mark of 23.43 seconds, set by Johannes Dietrich of
SC Wiesbaden in 2009.
Steffen, who also qualified as the fastest swimmer into the 50m freestyle final, had a considerably good start from his fellow swimmers. His longest dive placed him comfortably ahead of his rival in the start of the race and the arena’s favourite demonstrated
his gruelling efforts to conquer the fastest berth into the final.
Deibler had a half-body length lead over Heyl after the first 15 metres of the race and the German star cruised his way to the finishing wall, by escaping the reach of his competitors. His unmatchable swim of 23.46 seconds has placed him one step closer
to claim his berth in the German team to compete at Shanghai.
Deibler is the gold medallist of the 50m freestyle and the 50m butterfly events at the 2010 European Short Course Championships.
The final of the 50m butterfly will take place in the next session, where the top two finishers will confirm their spots in the German team to compete at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships. In addition, Deibler has also claimed to improve the national
record of the 50m event in the final.
