Question:

Stellenbosch laws?

So, are the Stellenbosch laws going to become permanent? In the summer tour matches, the referees are using the traditional laws, which I'm very glad to see. I haven't seen much news online lately about whether the IRB is going to mandate the rule changes, whether the Northern Hemisphere will have to experiment with them, or whatever.

I'm just getting into rugby, but some of these proposed changes seem ridiculous and extreme to me. Hands in the ruck? Legally collapsing a maul? These change the very basics of how the game is played. Seems like the IRB is trying to "open up" the game at the expense of the game itself. If I wanted more open play from 15 players all the same shape and size, I'd watch league.

Seriously, are ANY of these laws being rejected, especially hands in the ruck and the collapsing maul? Is there any chance of keeping the Stellenbosch laws out of union, or is it a done deal?

  1. After watching the Super 14, it sucked trying to watch the AB's play Ireland under the old laws.. In the Super 14 they didn't experiment with the hands in the ruck law or the collasping the maul 1 either, but the games were faster more exciting and there were far less penalties but alot more free kicks. You could only get penilised for offside or foul play eg, hihg tackle, fighting, delibertly collapsing a maul and not entering a ruck through the gate.

  2. theres a reason why the so called stellenbosch laws are called the experimental laws.

its an experiment to see if the game is going to be more open. and more entertaining.
