If you travel alone on the overnight ferry, do you have to share the cabin with a stranger (it is actually compulsory to have a cabin)? Thanks for any help!

  1. You are correct.  Harwich-Hoek van Holland used to be a fast craft but at the end of last year they stopped this service because of the price of petrol was too high, andf reverted back to the normal ferry crossing.

So it now takes 6hrs 15mins.

I haven't been on it since the change, but even before you were able to do night crossings and book a cabin.  If you do the night crossing then it is compulsary to book a cabin yes.  They do not do single cabins (so you have to book one for 2 people being the cheapest), but you will not have to share

Don't bother with the upgrades that they offer - it is not worth the additional money, just board with your own food (as food & drink are pricey onboard as well) go to the cabin and get some sleep, then you are refreshed for the next day

  2. The ferry that travels directly to the Hook of Holland is from Harwich in Essex.  That is the fast ferry(Jet Drive) which takes just over 3 hours to cross.

You don't need a cabin ( that route does not offer cabin facilities).

The overnight ferries travel from Hull to Rotterdam or Newcastle to Amsterdam.

Both ferries now have compulsory cabin bookings.

If you book a cheap cabin with 4 beds. There is a possibility that you will share with 3 strangers.  They do separate the men and women.  However I booked a cabin like this once and had the whole cabin to myself..  It depends how busy the ferry is.

Hope this helps plan your journey.
