Question:

Stencilling paint for a minwaxed table?

I stained my sanded table with minwax which leaves a glossy shine. I want to paint it with stencils but not sure of the paint I should use. The minwax is oil based. I asked at an OSH and a Home Depot but get completely different answers. Anybody know?

  1. Ask someone at hobby lobby or michaels. They will sell you the right stuff.

  2. We've stenciled floors with paint before. After staining you would generally want to put a coat of finish like polyurethane on to protect the stain from smudging. You can use almost any type of paint as long as it is compatible with your surface finish.

Let's say I stained something with Minwax Golden Oak and wanted green leaves on it. I would put on a thin coat of polyurethane, lightly sand after drying. Make my stencils and secure with tape, paint, let dry, coat poly over the stencils and then finally put a coat of poly on the entire table to protect the stencils.

p.s. Minwax stain is not considered a surface finish. It need protection like polyurethane or paste wax.
