Question:

Step Father's Income Used To Calculate FAFSA?

I am engaged to be married to a young lady who has a daughter about to enter college. I took her daughter to her college of choice for her financial aid review. I was informed that when I marry her mother, my income will be used to recalculate her financial need. At this time, she will not qualify for any assistance. Instead, I am suppose to pick up the tab. The principle of this matter sickens me! For 8 years I have paid 100% of her way along with a brand new vehicle. Her father has not done a thing for her in 18 years. Now, Uncle Sam is making it unbearable! If I marry her mother, even though her daughter did not want me to adopt her, it will cost me 150K in college tuition. This is absurd! Instead of calculating her need-based award on her mother and fathers income, it is forced on me. Her mother and I want to create a loving atmosphere by getting married. We postponed our marriage last night to reconsider our options. What do others think about this situation?

  1. If my step daughter uses my husband and myself on her fafsa form does that obligate us to sign her parent plus loan?
