Stephan Bonnar puts Kyle Kingsbury down; wins by unanimous decision – UFC 139 Recap
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) held UFC 139 in San Jose, California on Saturday, November 19, 2011. One of the matches on the card was between Stephan Bonnar and Kyle Kingsbury. Bonnar, nicknamed The American Psycho fought
against Kyle Kingsbury, nicknamed Kingsbu.
Bonnar won the fight as he got the win through a unanimous decision 30-27, 30–25, 30–27 over Kingsbury. Bonnar had a good start in the first round of the fight. Kingsbury did not let his opponent overpower him.
29-year old Kingsbury cornered Bonnar into the cage after which he planted heavy punches and knees on Bonnar. Both fighters remained on their feet for the early parts of the first round but they were in a continuous hunt to avail
any opportunity in putting their opponent down.
The 34-year old Bonnar went for a huge punch of his own by Kingsbury managed to move out of the way. This gave Kingsbury the opening he needed to hit a series of punches to Bonnar. Kingsbury stays on his feet for the early parts
of the first round but Bonnar uses his grappling and takedown techniques to take him down. Kingsbury was unable to escape Bonnar’s hold and lost the first round.
With the second round in progress, Bonnar was in search to keep the pressure on Kingsbury. Bonnar was relentless in grappling Kingsbury and getting an early advantage with his punches. Bonnar uses the ground game tactic by putting
Kingsbury down and holding him tight with his grip. He pressures Kingsbury in his grip as he tries to escape but his efforts go in vain. Bonnar remained focused in applying his submission move, either the mounted crucifix or the rear naked choke but Kingsbury
was countering well even if he was in his opponents’ grasp.
Kingsbury tried to hit his punches but Bonnar reacted faster when he attacked with a series of his punches. In the final round of the fight, the action continued as both fighters were using their opponent’s weight to put them on
the mat. Kingsbury does fall down and Bonnar was right top of him, but Kinsbu swiftly sprang on his feet, however, his comeback was short lived as Bonnar did all in his power to put him down again and succeeded.
Kingsbury, who hails from California, was the obvious crowd favourite but could not use the home crowd advantage in his favor. Kingsbury is then unable to get back up and take a vertical stance as Bonnar keeps the hometown hero
on the mat for the latter part of the third round. He throws short-ranged punches with intensity as the time ends.
