Stephanie Bengson outplays Su Jeong Jang in the third qualifier – Royal Indian Open 2012
Australian qualifier, Stephanie Bengson, stunned the third seeded Su Jeong Jang in the third qualifying round of Royal Indian Open on Sunday. She hunted down the superior-ranked Korean competitor in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, taking
one hour and 30 minutes to reach the main round of the WTA Challenger Series event in Pune, India.
The 17-year-old Korean entered the contest as the hot favourite for winning the matchup but she was absolutely stunned by an all-round brilliance from Bengson. She posted some solid resistance in the opening set but couldn’t hold
on to her momentum in the last minutes, eventually dropping the first set after a close fight. She couldn’t do much in the following set and merely pocketed two games in the entire set before submitting to the might of the Australian underdog.
The competitive opening set witnessed a total of five break points being scored from both ends. Two exchanges of serve breaks tied the score line at 5-5 but Bengson managed to sting another crucial one in the 11th game
to break into the lead. She served out of the set number one at 6-5 to get one up in the match.
She carried on her winning impetus in the following set as well and fully capitalized on four double faults from Jang. Bengson broke her opponent’s serve twice and reeled off 13 out of 14 first serve points in the second set to
seal victory and confirmed a berth in the main rounds of the Royal Indian Open.
Jang was badly affected by her own error-ridden game play, as she kept coughing unforced errors, including eight costly double faults, throughout the contest. Her bleak first serve could yield her 22 out of 37 points, while Bengson
bettered her by bagging 31 out of 43 points on her 74 per cent precise first serve. The Korean third seed had four break chances in the match but she could only convert two of them to remain at the disadvantage. On the other hand, the 25-year-old Australian
cashed in five out of seven break points to conclude her victory in a comprehensive manner.
