Stephanie Dubois crushes Irina Falconi; cruises into the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Lucky loser, Canada’s Stephanie Dubois brushes off American qualifier Irina Falconi in straight sets at Wimbledon Championships 2011, third of the fourth Grand Slam event held in London, England. She barely sweated in the entire
match to register a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the 21-year-old American to advance into the second round on Tuesday.
The Canadian dominated all over Court 10 to seal the deal in sixty-four minutes against Falconi in their fifth meeting. After earning the victory at this major grass court tournament, Dubois not only secured a second round spot
in this tournament but also took revenge from her loss to American at US Open qualifiers last year.
Lucky loser surprised everyone by showing exceptional attributes in the opening set. She smoothly bagged entire serves through backhand slices from her arsenal of skills. Dubois faced zero breakpoint and converted two out of four
breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to clinch the opener with an assuring 6-2 score line in just twenty-seven minutes. She also clobbered a much better first serve share of 77 percent as compared to Falconi’s 71 percent and registered a spectacular 88
percent win on it.
24-year-old Canadian kept momentum floating into the final set and bombarded groundstrokes to reel off first four games in a row. She then held on to her remaining serves to pocket the set with a 6-2 win again. She produced a slightly
higher first serve share of 77 percent as opposed to Falconi’s 75 percent but earned an amazing 82 percent win on it. Furthermore, Dubois saved the only breakpoint faced and converted two out of three breakpoint chances to her advantage.
The Laval native, Dubois hasn’t had much progress in any WTA events she entered. She lost in the final qualifying round at Australian and French Open and carried her losing way in this Grand Slam event as well as she lost to Russian
Vitalia Diatchenko in straight sets in the last qualifying round. However, some players got injured and withdrew from the event, making room for the Canadian to enter the main draw. Dubois availed the opportunity and displayed her magnificent skills to advance.
Up next for the blooming Canadian is the eleventh seeded, German Andrea Petkovic.
23-year-old German, who won the title at Stuttgart, downed a lucky loser in her opening round match. She registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Stephanie Foretz Gacon in eighty-three minutes on Court 18. Petkovic prevailed throughout
the match and converted three out of four breakpoint opportunities to her advantage. She also saved seven out of eight breakpoints conceded with her tremendous defensive skills.
