Stephanie Dubois trounces Marina Shamayko in qualifiers – Internationaux de Strasbourg 2012
Qualifying sixth seed, Stephanie Dubois, dragged down the Russian starlet, Marina Shamayko, in straight sets at the Internationaux de Strasbourg 2012 on Sunday. She nudged up a 6-3, 6-4 victory against the Russian to book a spot in the final qualifying round
at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) clay court event held in Strasbourg, France.
The Canadian tennis star got the better of Shamayko in one hour and 40 minutes. After earning the spotlight, Dubois charged into the final round of the qualifying competition at this International-level tournament.
Both contenders played brilliant tennis in the opening set. The Canadian however edged past Shamayko with a 6-3 success. She exchanged three serve breaks before getting the breakthrough in the eighth game and bagging the opener. Dubois brushed off two out
of five breakpoints she came across but capitalised on four out of five break chances to inch towards the glory.
Ranked 98th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Dubois carried her winning ways towards the follow-up set. After she lost her serve in the sixth game, she was trailing at 2-4. However, the Canadian unleashed her skills after that and went on a four-game
tear, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to four.
All in all, the 25-year-old capitalised fully on the six double faults and several unforced errors her rival committed. She also clobbered a better first serve share of 66 per cent as compared to the Russian’s 62 per cent and impressively clicked 20 out
of 41 points on it.
Next in line for Dubois is the qualifying second seed, Alexandra Panova. The seeded Russian warded off late resistance to outclass Germany’s Kathrin Woerle in straight sets to set-up this battle. Panova lost her serve five times but availed six out of 10
break chances to formulate a 6-4, 7-6(2) score line in one hour and 56 minutes.
The third seeded qualifier, Mandy Minella also earned the fame later that day. She broke the Austrian contender, Tina Schiechtl serve 10 times to manipulate a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 success in two hours and 23 minutes. The Luxembourgian produced almost an equal first
serve share of 62 per cent but availed 31 out of 55 points on it.
