Stephanie Gacon defeats Scarlett Werner in qualifying second round – Generali Ladies Linz 2011
French tennis pro Stephanie Foretz Gacon battled past Scarlett Werner of Germany 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Sunday to book her place in the final round of 2011 Generali Ladies Linz qualifying round here in Linz, Austria.
Unseeded at the Women’s Tennis Association tournament, Gacon looked in terrific form in a thrilling three set match that lasted for 2 hours and 2 minutes on the hard courts of Linz. Although Gacon lost the track a bit in second
set, she came back brilliantly in third and final set to register an emphatic victory.
Werner had her chances to take control of the match but she made unforced errors at crucial moments to let her opponent dictate terms. Despite having the momentum on her side, she failed to grab opportunities in the decider and
she eventually wore out. She will be hoping to bounce back strongly on her next appearance on the WTA tour.
Gacon was absolutely delighted with her effort and she aimed to continue her impressive form in the upcoming matches of at the WTA tournament. If she can bring some more consistency in her game play, she will have a great opportunity
to win her first every title at the WTA arena.
Ranked 97th in the world, Gacon made a solid start to the contest. Breaking the serve early, she gained momentum in the opening set. Werner was also up for the challenge and she broke straight back to stay in the set.
Gacon had her second break chance in seventh game of the set, which she converted with a gorgeous backhand winner down the line. Leading 5-4, she held on to her service game comfortably to earn 1 -0 set score lead.
Werner regrouped herself and showed amazing fighting ability and mental strength in the following set. Raising the level of her play, she created all sorts of problems for her opponent from deep behind the baseline. Using her rock
solid defence, she saved crucial break points against herself. Breaking the serve twice, she raced to an impassable 5-2 lead. Although she suffered a break of serve, she managed to take the match into the third set.
Gacon, however, displayed some high quality tennis in the decider. Breaking the serve at regular intervals, she put herself in driving seat. Holding on to her service games with ease, the French woman put the challenger under immense
pressure. Hitting a blistering serve ace, she made a couple of match points available to her and then converted the first one to seal a memorable victory.
