Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Courtney Conlogue win Round 4: ASP 6-Star Swatch Girls Pro France - Day 2
After successful performances in round four, Courtney Conlogue (USA), Sally Fitzgibbons, Justine Dupont (FRA), Alana Blanchard (HAW), Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) and Dimity Stoyle (AUS) storm into round 5 of the ASP 6-Star Swatch Girls Pro France at Les Bourdaines
in France, on Thursday, June 2.
In the first heat, American surfer Courtney Conlogue got the better of her opponents by a score of 12.25. Georgia Fish wound up second with a score of 9.95 and Lee Ann Curren settled for third place with 8.90 points. Laurina McGrath had a poor outing and
earned 3.90 points. As a result, McGrath and Curren find themselves eliminated from the competition.
Speaking to reporters after the heat, Conlogue said, “I caught this wave that looked really good. I did a first hit and then on the next section I wanted to hit it really bad to get it up to the 6.5 range and then I caught a rail and the board came up and
hit me in the mouth. My jaw is a little sore but it is all ok.”
In heat 2, the Australian surfer, Sally Fitzgibbons earned 14.60 points out of 20 and moved into the fifth round of the championship. Paige Hareb of New Zealand came second, scoring 14.10 points. The two surfers who got eliminated were Pauline Ado and Nikita
Robb, who could just manage 10.75 and 7.50 points respectively.
After her victory in heat 2, Fitzgibbons said, “I enjoy coming to France and this year I went first to Roland Garros which was an amazing experience and now here the waves a good fun and I am feeling relaxed and just enjoying myself and looking forward to
the next rounds.... I am here with my family and they are here for the ride.”
In heat 3, French surfer, Justine Dupont ruled the roost by scoring 14.60 points, while Cannelle Bulard was not far behind with her two-wave total of 13.00. Nicola Atherton of Australia earned a disappointing 9.70 points and Bianca Buitendag, with her 8.40
points, rounded off the elimination list.
Alana Blanchard of Hawaii won heat 4 with a score of 11.65, while Suelen Naraisa of Brazil settled for second place with 11.10 points. Meanwhile, disappointing performances from Lakey Peterson of USA, with 10.55 points, and Rebecca Woods of Australia, with
8.40 points, saw both surfers bow out of the championship.
In heat 5, Australian surfing sensation, Stephanie Gilmore earned first place honours with a decent score of 13.00. Sarah Baum, Phillipa Anderson, and Maud Le Car finished second, third and fourth in the heat with a total score of 12.95, 11.15 and 8.90 respectively.
The bottom two surfers, Le car and Anderson, as a result, will no longer be able to contest in the championship.
Finally, Australian surfer Dimity Stoyle won heat 6 of round four with a winning score of 11.40, while Sage Erickson of USA settled for second place with a score of 10.40. It was an unfortunate day for Hawaii's Malia Manuel, who couldn't outscore Erickson,
and ended up with 9.35 points. Meanwhile, Sofia Mulanovich of Peru couldn't keep her title hopes alive as well, as she finished fourth with 9.30 points.
