Stephanie Gilmore prevails over Carissa Moore to step into Roxy Pro Biarritz 2012 Final
Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore put on a superb performance to get the better of Hawaii’s Carissa Moore in the second Semi-final at Roxy Pro Biarritz 2012, the latest stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, which went down
at La Grande Plage in Biarritz, France, on Saturday, July 14.
The win not only served to send Gilmore into the Final, but also confirmed her as the ASP Women’s World Champion for the fifth time.
Both Gilmore and former ASP Women’s Champion Moore had been looking in an intimidating form since the start of the season, managing to make a solid impact at the previous five stops of the elite tour and continuing the momentum at Biarritz as well.
The conditions over the last few days were not the best, but both the ladies had adapted exceptionally well to the winds and waves, managing to find solid scores in all their heats to steadily progress through the competition.
Get pitted against each other in the second Semi-final, both Gilmore and Moore clearly had their work cut out for them.
As the battle got underway, the 19-year-old Moore went through a series of average scores before posting a 7.17 on the score-board. She soon went on to add an additional 5.33 points to her account, thus reaching a heat-total of 12.50 points.
Gilmore got off to a slow start, but soon stepped up to steal the show with a late onslaught. Earning an 8.17 off her first business-wave and backing it up with an 8.93-point ride, she finished with a heat-total of 17.10 points, thus walking away with the
win.
Despite getting eliminated after getting so close to the event title, Moore seemed pretty satisfied with the result and her overall performance.
“I’m pretty happy,” Moore said. “Obviously I would have loved to surf another final but it’s still pretty good. I think the women’s level has come a long way, but honestly today it was more a matter of being in the right spot and getting in a good rhythm
and it’s tough if you don’t get to find the good opportunities and another person does. I’m always looking forward to competing so I’m really looking forward to going to the US Open and hopefully I’ll get a good performance there.”
A successful result in the semi-finals carried Gilmore into the Final, where she was to square-off with her fellow countryperson Tyler Wright for the Roxy Pro Biarritz 2012 Title.
