Stephanie Rice and Alicia Coutts will train in Northern Hemisphere to prepare for world titles
Australian female swimming superstars, Stephanie Rice and Alicia Coutts will attend a training camp at the Northern
Hemisphere to prepare themselves for the upcoming international meets.
These two swimmers will train alongside 28 fellow swimmers, as they prepare for the upcoming swimming championships
in Mexico, European Championships and the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai.
The squad of these 30 swimmers will train for five weeks in Northern Hemisphere and then compete at the Mexico,
European and USA Championships to warm themselves up for the upcoming world titles.
Head Coach to Swimming Australia, Leigh Nugent said that the participation of their national swimmers at these
international meets is just a part of their preparation for the 2011 World titles.
While expressing their training strategies, Nugent said, “We’ve had groups at altitude in Spain for a couple of
weeks already and some have also just headed off to Mexico as well. The block of training between our Trials in April and the world championships in July is all about what works for individual squads and athletes, and that varies across the team.”
Nugent said these supervised altitude camps will help swimmers in enhancing their performances. In addition, their
participation at the upcoming international meets will provide them with a chance to know their standings against their rivals, before the World Championships.
Nugent added, “For some, they will get the benefit of honing their race skills at the Mare Nostrum and Santa Clara
series, while for others they have decided to go on mini camps in Australia to focus on particular training blocks.”
Australian team for the Shanghai titles will return home after the training and competition sessions, to compete
at the 2011 Australian Short Course Championships, from July 1-3, 2011. These championships will act as a second trial and is a chance for those Australian swimmers, who failed to qualify for the 2011 World Championships in their first attempt.
Nugent was very hopeful of dominating performances of his pupils at the world titles, saying that after such an exhaustive schedule, their swimmers will surely make their nation
proud.
