Stephen Cummings succeeded at the stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana 2012
Stephen Cummings of Team BMC opened his 2012 winning account after his remarkable performance during the 172.8 kilometre stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana 2012.
The cyclist crossed the finish-line in an impressive time of 4 hours, 5 minutes and 2 seconds and restricted Cameron Meyer of Team Orica-GreenEdge and Juan Antonio Flecha of Team Sky Procycling for the second and the third positions respectively.
“I had to win alone because there were fast people in the group,” Cummings briefed after the stage.
“The whole day was hard with the wind, but in the end I played it very well. This win is for my team for always supporting me, because it’s been a very difficult year”.
Simon Clarke of Team Orica-GreenEdge, Linus Gerdemann of Team RadioShack-Nissan, Thomas De Gendt of Team Vacansoleil-DCM and John Degenkolb of Team Argos-Shimano occupied the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh positions in the respective order.
Joaquim Rodriguez continued his dominance after the stage 13 classifications with a gap of 13 seconds over Alberto Contador of Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank.
Christopher Froome of Team Sky Procycling, Alejandro Valverde of Team Movistar and Robert Gesink of Team Rabobank still hold the next three positions respectively.
Stephen Cummings secured the maximum number of 25 points after the stage and achieved the top spot, with Cameron Meyer and Juan Antonio Flecha holding the second and the third positions with 20 and 16 points respectively.
Thomas De Gendt of Team Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling and Juan Antonio Flecha Giannoni of Team Sky claimed the first and the second sprints of the race.
Team Rabobank is leading the team’s classifications with a convincing margin of 2 minutes and 19 seconds over Team Sky Procycling.
Team AG2R La Mondiale is holding the third spot with Team Movistar and Team Katusha at the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
