Golden State Warriors seem reluctant to offer the 24 year old oft-injured combo guard a contract extension and seem intent to wait until training camp to make a decision.
When the 24 year old Stephen Curry arrived in the NBA, fresh out of college and getting selected as the overall 7th pick, there were huge expectations from the dynamic point guard. However, various injuries have prevented
him from living to his true potential and three seasons on in his career , some might find it very hard to believe that Curry is still playing on his rookie contract.
That may end very soon though as Curry and his agent Lance Young are confident that a new deal will be worked out as a result of the recently planned tabled talks for a contract extension.
“I’m very optimistic about getting a deal done,” said Young. “I think we can get something done by the 31st (Oct. 31, the deadline for Curry to sign a deal).”
However, all hopes of landing a contract extension lie on Curry’s ability to prove his fitness through training camp and until then, the speculation of the Warriors management being reluctant to offer a new deal will continue to
surface.
From the Warriors point of view, the reluctance would be rightly justified as they would not want to offer Curry a new deal without first looking at the progress the point guard has made over the summer. There is no doubting Curry’s
ability and his career averages of 17.5 points are proof of his mere brilliance, but injuries, especially ankle issues, have been one of the main reasons for most of his absences.
However, Curry and his agent are not worried about that, and are optimistic that a deal would be made before October 31st. And even if a new deal does not emerge by then, it certainly won’t be a bad thing as Curry would
become a restricted free agent next summer giving other teams the opportunity to land his signature, which will force the Warriors to match any deal that would the point guards way.
Every one of those things though, will only happen if Curry is able to put behind the injury troubles.
