Stephen Curry has a reason for not performing in season opener for Golden State Warriors – NBA News
After having one of the best preseasons out of all the teams in the NBA, the Golden State Warriors got into trouble early on in their regular season when they almost lost their opening game to the Phoenix Suns.
The Warriors blew away a 17 point first half lead and had to climb back from an eight point deficit in the final period to secure a hard fought victory. Stephen Curry, David Lee and Andrew Bogut, three of the best players on the Warriors roster and the core of the team, struggled to find their form on the given day and played poorly to say the least. Curry and Lee combined to go 4 of 30 from the field. Bogut, returning from an injury that forced him out of action for 9 months, was restricted to only 18 minutes of playing time by the team medical staff.
While it is unknown why Bogut and Lee struggled to deliver on opening night, Curry believes he has a reason for the poor showing during the game. The point guard finalized a four year contract extension worth $44 million with the team early on the same day, and said that the anxiety of the deal had been weighing heavily on him during the 48 hours leading up to the game.
Hence, he feels he was a bit lost and unable to fully concentrate on the game.
“I think it was just one of those games, but it was just a crazy day. It was still a little nerve-wracking the last 48 hours seeing if we could get something done, and obviously we didn’t have any games so it’s pretty much all I was thinking about. And then this morning, realizing that it was finally done, and then media obligations and family texting me every five seconds. It was definitely a blessing. But thankfully we were able to get a win and finish off the day nicely,” said Curry.
Now that Curry has the contract extension under his belt and a guaranteed future over the next four NBA seasons, he can go back to focusing on his game and helping the Warriors put up a strong effort for a playoff berth this coming season.
