Stephen Garcia still South Carolina Gamecocks starter
South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has put an end to the quarterback controversy surrounding his team by naming Stephen Garcia the starter when the Gamecocks take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in their next match in week six.
The controversy arose after Spurrier elected to take Garcia out of the game in the fourth quarter of their loss to Auburn over the weekend. Garcia had fumbled two balls in the quarter and Spurrier decided the squad needed a change. However, Garcia’s replacement,
freshman Connor Shaw, proceeded to throw two consecutive interceptions.
The loss to Auburn was a difficult one for the Gamecocks, as the club was unbeaten in their previous three games and sat 12th in the nation. The defeat knocked South Carolina down to 20th in the country, two weeks prior to their match-up with number one ranked
Alabama.
Garcia had been having a fairly productive season up until that point. The junior was actually having his best game of the season up until the two fumbles in the fourth quarter. Garcia registered 235 passing yards, while completing 15 of 21 attempts and tossing
three touchdowns. In addition, the youngster also ran 21 yards on the day. This season Garcia has amassed 743 passing yards to go along with five touchdowns.
The Freshman Shaw has only managed 18 passing attempts so far this season and has only thrown for one touchdown, which was in the first game of the season against Southern Mississippi.
The Gamecocks will be in tough against the best team in the nation in week six. Alabama has looked unstoppable on offence and is coming off a win over #10 ranked Arkansas. Nevertheless, South Carolina will be hoping to catch a tired Crimson Tide side on 9 October,
as they have a game against #7 Florida in week five.
