  1. try this out

  2. "Plans" that include lip service and tough talk now, with absolutely no implementation before 2020, are the same kind of political pettifoggery that Bush et al are trying to sell as meaningful action in the U.S.

The IPCC recommendations on mitigating climate change have just been released. Read the executive summary, then compare to what Harper has been talking about. He's selling sizzle, not steak.

  3. Harper is caught in a dilemma.  Many of his conservative supporters don't accept global warming.  He himself vigorously opposed the Kyoto treaty.

Now global warming caused mostly by man is an accepted fact, because of the scientific data.  He's an intelligent man and understands that.  Hence, the dilemma.

His response has been to publicly accept the reality of global warming and say Canada will do something.  But not what needs to be done, only things that won't upset his political base too much.

At the root of the problem is that Canadian government is splintered.  No one party commands a majority.  On the environment, most Canadians favor strong action, but on other issues they often like the Conservatives position.  So Harper is in power.  He has a political base which opposes strong actions on global warming, and governs a country in which a majority of citizens support strong actions.

    It's kind of a mess.

Search Google News for Stephen Harper global warming for lots of information.  But it will be contradictory, depending on the political bias of the media doing the report.  A mess.
