Stephen Hendry ready for Australia, John Higgins and Stephen Maguire stay on top at World Cup Snooker
Scotsman Stephen Hendry is all set to take part in the first major ranking snooker event in Australia, the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open. The event will kick off on Monday, July 18 at Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria.
The Ice Man had a tough last season as he did not win any major title, although his performance in other events was pretty decent. Hendry has now dropped out of the world’s Top 16 snooker players and is at number 17 for the first time in his 23-year snooker
career. The veteran is still hopeful to get back in the Top 8 this season.
Hendry finished the previous season in disappointment, when the legend hinted at his retirement from world snooker, after crashing out of 2011 World Snooker Championship. However, the 42-year-old came back into the game with greater zeal and ambition.
Currently, The Wonder Brain is looking forward to grab one of the top eight spots in the World Snooker Rankings and in order to do that, he has to perform extraordinarily well in the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open, starting from Monday, July 18.
While speaking to the local media, Hendry said, “Australia is a long way to go from the UK. I won my first professional tournament in Sydney in 1987 (in the Australian Masters) and haven't been back since. Everyone wants to have a worldwide circuit and see
the game grow in different parts of the world so it's great that we have a new tournament there.”
John Higgins and Stephen Maguire stay on top at World Cup Snooker
Meanwhile, two other Scottish snooker pros, world snooker champion John Higgins and Stephen Maguire remain on top in 2011 World Cup Snooker in Thailand.
The two Scottish cuemen are making their mark at the Bangkok Convention Centre, as they remain on top of their group after winning two matches. World Snooker Champion John Higgins and Stephen Maguire defeated Poland’s Kacper Filipiak and Krzysztof Wróbel
in the opener, and Saleh Mohammad and Mohammad Rais Senzahi of Afghanistan in their second match-up.
