Stephen Jackson looking for contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs – NBA News
Stephen Jackson was having a bad time in the NBA before being picked up by the San Antonio Spurs last season.
Jackson was signed with the Golden State Warriors, but they traded him away to the Charlotte Bobcats, who were looking for a respected veteran to bring them out of their miseries. However, Charlotte also later traded Jackson to the Milwaukee Bucks, where he was unable to get along with the front office and coaching staff. It was ultimately a sigh of relief for Jackson when he was signed by the San Antonio Spurs, one of the most respected and accomplished basketball franchises of the past decade.
Jackson signed on with the Spurs, knowing that his NBA career had essentially been saved. He played 21 games for the team last season, averaging 8.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.3 steals in 23.8 minutes of playing time. His grind style of basketball and his defensive capabilities allowed him to become a key player in the Spurs rotation.
However, Jackson knows that he is on the final year of his contract and will become a free agent next summer. And for someone who is on a championship contending team, Jackson wants to sign an extension with the team as soon as possible.
“Only one thing could make Jackson’s professional life better: An extension of his contract, worth $10 million in its final season. “I want it, but I can’t control it. Every day when I walk in here I’m hoping they’ll call me in and say, ‘Jack, here’s your extension.’ I think I deserve it, but at the end of the day I’m still happy to be here and all I can worry about is what I can control, and that’s my play,”” reported the San Antonio Express-News.
S-Jax knows that he is entering his 13th season in the NBA, and as a veteran back-up, cannot demand big money. He is an asset on the bench of any team, and the Spurs have used his effectively under the brain of Gregg Popovich. However, the Spurs have grown to become one of the top franchises in the NBA because they make informed decisions at the right time. Hence, they will only offer him a deal if they feel it can add value to the team.
